| PROJECTS |
“The relevance of Saint Thirugnanasambandar’s religious
service to the modern world” |
| This project, entitled “The relevance of Saint Thirugnanasambandar’s religious service to modern world” is funded by Thiru V.Krishna Kumar. It is a one year project. Thirugnanasambanthar, the first of the celebrated four of the Saiva tradition, had done a yeoman service to revive the Tamil religion and society, even at a tender age. He had travelled throughout Tamil Nadu in the 7th century AD and had created an awakening in the minds of the people to understand and cherish their ancient culture. The project aims at critically analysing the 4000 songs of this saint. |

| RESEARCH |
Tamil Research Centre (Panniru Thirumurai Aivu Mayyam) |
| A Tamil Research Centre functions along with the Tamil Department of the College. Though it concentrates mainly on the study of 12 sacred books of Saiva Religion, it gives importance to the related fields also. |
-
In 2000, the Centre conducted a seminar on the theme, 'How Far are the Teachings of the Saints of Bakthi Literature Applicable? - The Teachings of the Saints of Bakthi Literature'. The essays, which dealt on the social application of the devotional literature to modern problems, were published as a book 'We Can Live on this Earth in a Useful Way ' . The book was widely appreciated
|
- Every year the centre conducts Devara Music Competition. Besides the conventional artists, all those who are interested in singing are eligible to participate in the competition. To be impartial, prizes are being given separately, for those below and those above 25 yrs.
|
-
Likewise, a Music homage function by name 'Nalvar Aradhana' is conducted every year. Though it is simple and small in magnitude, the artists render the songs from Sampanthar, Appar and Sundarar Thevaram and Thiruvasagam of Manika Vasagar. The holiness and purity can be felt.
|
- Last year a conference on Thirumanthiram, the famous book of Saint Tirumoolar was conducted. Thirumanthiram, which forms the 10th sacred book, consists of 3000 songs. It deals with all the four paths of Karma, Gnana, Bakthi and Rajayoga. It is very difficult to understand. Therefore an attempt was made to render the poems in simple and understandable prose form. A book of this nature 'God created me in an able way' was published.
|
- The Centre conducted a seminar on the world famous Tirukkural. The theme was, 'Scientific Approaches in Tirukkural': Many scholars presented papers on Management, Economics, Psychology, Medicine, Botany, Zoology etc.. It was a great success.
|
- Propagation of Saiva Siddhantha is the main motto of the Centre. In that way an ambitious proposal to bring out an Encyclopedia on Saiva Religion and Siddhantha, is under process.
|
- The Centre conducted a one day workshop on Herbs, Herbal Medicine and their values in Modern World. Apart from native doctors modern medical experts also attended the function which took place on 23.02.02.
- On 10.03.02 a State Level Seminar was conducted on the Saiva Philosophy. Sivagnanabotham was the topic discussed. 12 reputed scholars spoke on 12 sutras. Hundreds of people from all over Tamil Nadu took part.
Again on 24.03.02 a seminar on Manikkavasagar the author of ‘Eighth Sacred Book’ took place, Thiruvasagam and Thirukovaiyar were the sources.
- The philosophy of Tamil Siddhas (the mystic saints) is a subject of abstract one. To highlight the various aspects of that, there was a seminar on their views on God, Life, Spirtiualism, Science etc. It took place on 08.06.02.
- On 30.06.02 a State Level Seminar was conducted on Agathiar Devara Thirattu" (A collection of Devara Songs, compiled by Sage Agasthiya). Eight scholars highlighted the eight chapters of the collection.
- The town Sirkazhi in Tamil Nadu is an ancient one. It has 12 names, which have a link with 12 deluges. To bring out the veracity of this idea, a seminar took place on 28.07.02. 12 famous scholars spoke on the idea.
- Apart from these, the Centre involves itself with the Tamil Department of the college, to conduct seminars and conferences on literature, folklore and allied subjects. The most advanced topic 'Feminism' was not an exception.
- Many guest lectures are being arranged, at least one in a month. Reputed scholars from all over Tamilnadu are invited to share their experiences and to give guidance to the students. Some of the scholars who were here are:
